NaNoWriMo - Because I'm Crazy.

Hey there fellow writers and marauders!! Prongs here bringing you a very special blog update dedicated to that wonderful time of the year known as
National Novel Writing Month!!

For those of you who are sane enough to not to be participating, or are just unaware of what this event entails, here is the run down:
National Novel Writing Month takes place from November 1st-30th. In this time any one who is participating (yours truly) is committing themselves to writing 50,000 words of a novel.

I'm sorry....did I say 50,000.
Jesus yes I did. So like I said, for those of you who are not crazy and enjoy having any amount of a life, you can live vicariously through me and some fellow NaNoWriMo authors as we plunge our way through a month of literary hysteria!
I thought it would be a fun new weekly if I kept those of you who read our humble blog updated on my status and my story, as well as share information about other writers who are participating in the event. The road promises to be long and hard but hopefully at the end we will all have something that we can at least be remotely proud of.

Ok so with this first post I figured I would feature myself, since who knows how long I will be able to keep my own story going. For those of you who read the blog you know me as Prongs, the serious reviewer and witty partner of Padfoot. I have been interested in writing for quite some time but have never really had the dicipline to sit down and put pen to paper (or finger to keyboard). However this past fall I partook in a writing workshop which seemed to be the intial bump I needed to get the creative juices flowing.
You can follow my NaNoWriMo status here as well as through the blog and on twitter. Any comments, ideas, enouragments, or down right judgments are more than welcomed. This is a community event so the more people that meet and grow together because of NaNoWriMo the better.

For those of you who are interested here is a bit about the story I have started:

(WORKING) Title: Trigger

Current Word Count:
252
Synopsis: A world exists where by simply uttering a single phrase could 'Trigger' something in your mind, causing you to drop dead. Some people can sense what their is, and some people have no ide
a.

Excerpt:
Jeffery L. Swiney calmly and evenly said to his wife, ‘Matilda dear, please pass the pork chops’ and then unsurprisingly dropped dead.

There was a quiet, controlled response from the dinner party as every one let out a regrettable sigh, pushing their chairs in to help Matilda roll over her husband’s tubby corpse. I watched as Mr. Hilden from down the road made his way from the dining room to the kitchen, and with no sense of urgency pick up the receiver to place a muffled call for an ambulance that arrived 15 minutes later. Chairs scuffed the hard-wood floor and Mozart continued gently in the background as more neighbors offered their condolences for Mrs. Swiney’s loss by absentmindly shaking her hand, while looking for their belongings.
The dinner party had seemingly come to an unfortunate stop, so one by one the neighbors began to retire back to their own homes just up the road, a long enough walk to remember Mr. Swiney, then possibly salvage the night with a stop for ice cream. Since Mrs. Swiney turned down my offer to help her clean up the wine her recently departed husband’s hand had spilt, and since all the other neighbors seemed preoccupied with the task of shallow valedictions, I picked up my fork and began to slowly pick at the last few potatoes left on my plate. After all, there was no reason to let the death of Jeffery Swiney spoil what other wise had been a perfectly pleasant evening.
There you go folks. A short clip of what is sure to be a ridiculous, unorganized, mess of a novel but at least it will be 50,000 words by the end!!

Remember to keep checking in on my status as well as information on other NaNoWriMo authors!!

  13. Well, here is my take on Something Wicked This Way Comes. Not as involved as my Vonnegut post, I'm afraid.
